Records Are Still Alive

There are people in this country who spend their lives digging and digging. They use their bare hands to try and uncover these gems for their own personal collection. The places where they dig are hard to find but the atmosphere is perfect for them. The music makes them comfortable and the smell takes them back in time. Back to a time when people loved music and these gems, better known as records, were vital. The record business has had its ups and downs throughout its years, but according to Nielson SoundScan, vinyl record sales went up 33 percent and two out of every three vinyl albums were bought at an independent record store. There are dozens of independent record stores around the Los Angeles area and plenty of them are opening up around the country as well. (read more...) |

After graduation, Elsa Tejeda sees herself 3,000 miles away in New York City where she plans to take her passion for teaching elementary students with autism. The junior, child and adolescent development major, believes that special needs children need a lot of visual work and undivided attention to help them learn better. But she doesn’t mind being busy when it comes to teaching kids, its something she said comes natural. “I guess I’m just a kid at heart,” she said. Tejada has had plenty of time to test out her career choice. She volunteered in a special education class and described it as the best experience. _ (read more...) |
United We Serve collect food and clothes for families in need

Thanks to volunteers and donors, Unified We Serve beat last year’s total number of collected items during the Third Annual Campus Clothing and Food Drive. In spite of this achievement, however, the program’s set goal of 30,000 items was not met during the two-week charity event. Around 16,000 cans, books, clothes and toys were rounded up during the event, which drew 1,000 items more than last year’s total of 15,000. The items collected will go to the Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND), a Pacoima-based non-profit organization that serves over 31,000 individuals per month. (read more...) |
Glendale College Singers Perform Spring Concert

Music-lovers filled the pews at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on May 17, anticipating Glendale College’s Concert Singers Spring Performance. Family members, friends and music fans attended the concert that filled the small church with graceful singing to please any listener. Directed by Peter Green, the concert started out with a big bang as the singers performed “Gloria,” composed by Francis Poulene. Soprano Jennifer Miller pleased the crowd as she sang her solo. The first half of the concert was accompanied by the Concert Singers Orchestra, which was led by accompanist Anita Hanawalt. (read more...) |
